The fact is that it not only caters to the clothing needs of community but also accounts for sizeable portion in country’s exports. Handloom industry is one of the largest cottage industries in our country with a long tradition of craftsmanship and representing the vibrant Indian culture. Indian artists are appreciated globally for their hand spinning, weaving and printing elegance.
Every state of the country has a unique handloom product to offer and is appreciated all over the world for its craftsmanship and intricacy of designs. A review of the products and specialties of clusters need to be designed as training modules and offered to youths. Big organizations and large retailers have engaged with the traditional weavers and artisans and are supporting them in marketing their products to consumers worldwide.
Youths need to be trained to promote Indian handloom products. Marketing Issues is the biggest challenge in current scenario of handloom. Taking it into mind, modules such as marketing management of handloom product are also very important and need to be offered to youths. This will help handloom sector to improve their market and sales. Training requirements in this sector come out from the changes and innovations in the yarns, fabrics, garments, fashion and product blend expected in upcoming years.
Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Jodhpur under the banner of Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India and under the aegis of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, New Delhi came into inception on 16th September 1993 to cater for the needs of the Handloom and Textile Industry of India. Initially, the institute was started in a rented building, situated in Marudhar Industrial Area, Basni Phase-II, Jodhpur and now it has its building constructed over the 30 acres land allotted by State Govt. at Nayapura, Chokha, Jodhpur, nearly 10 Kms. from Jodhpur. Railway station. The inauguration of the new campus was held on 6th September 2001 and began to function w.e.f. 01.01.2002.
